A Feast and a Discussion

Why is Mary’s death so important that it’s annual memorial is preceded by a two-week fast, and the day of the feast (August 15th) is one of the greatest feasts of the Orthodox Church? Fr Maximos Konstas will discuss these questions and more, explaining who the Theotokos is, why she is central to Orthodox theology and devotional life, and what the significance of her death can mean for us today. Join us in this discussion as we break the fast in fellowship! The Very Rev. Archimandrite Maximos Constas is Professor of Patristics and Orthodox Spirituality, and Director of the Pappas Patristic Institute at Holy Cross Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA. His recent publications include an edition and translation of Maximus the Confessor, The Ambigua, and a translation of the same author’s Responses to the Questions of Thalassios. His most recent project is on the Life of the Virgin by John Geometres, a Byzantine writer of the tenth century, which will be published by Harvard University in 2023.  RSVP here.
